Only 30 percent of the over 40s retain all their natural teeth, but often the fault of inflamed gums; the rules of prevention on the occasion of World Oral Health Day
It is possible to keep a smile all your life: losing your teeth and having to put on a prosthesis, fixed or mobile, is not an inevitable fate as many believe. This was underlined by the Italian Society of Periodontology and Implantology (SIdP) on the occasion of the World Oral Health Day on March 20revealing that tooth loss is often the fault of inflamed and neglected gums for too long: with adequate prevention, early diagnosis and any timely therapies, it is possible to save the teeth.
Necessary prevention
Unfortunately, many do not succeed: according to data released by SIdP, only 30 percent of people over the age of 40 have all of their natural teeth and as many as 25 percent of the 65-74 year olds can no longer boast any teeth of their own, up to over 50 percent among the over 75s. teeth: these, without adequate intervention, become mobile and fall out. At least 3.5 million Italians are at risk of being left without a smile due to severe periodontitis, about 15 percent of the 25-30 million Italians with gingival inflammation. Hence the first step to preserving all teeth is maintaining healthy gums with adequate prevention made of careful oral hygiene and regular check-ups at the dentist; a need also underlined by the information campaign launched on the occasion of World Oral Health Day by ANDI Foundationwhich aims to remember how important it is to take care of your teeth and gums every day, learning to recognize mouth enemies and defense strategies.
Severe inflammation
Today, however, it is possible to intervene even in the case of severe periodontitis: the new European guidelines for the management of the most complex cases have just been published and how it explains Nicola Sforza, SIdP president, periodontal disease is a complex pathology linked to the accumulation in the oral cavity of bacterial plaque, which affects the supporting and supporting structures of the tooth such as the alveolar bone and gingival tissue. When the disease is severe, chewing is impaired and several teeth have already been lost, but always possible to save those that remain: this is achieved with an early treatment to treat the teeth still present so that they last over time, replacing the missing ones with traditional implants and / or prostheses, based on the patient’s overall assessment. All this always after the recovery of overall oral healthAlthough implants represent an extraordinary way to replace missing teeth, they must only be used when the patient has recovered from periodontitis, to prevent the tissues around the implants themselves from becoming ill, leading to loss of these too.
