Governors of the region published a note criticizing Congress’ decision to reduce taxes
The governors that make up the Northeast Consortium once again criticized the 17% ceiling for the ICMS (Tax on the Circulation of Goods and Services) on electricity, fuel, telecommunications and public transport. The text was approved on Wednesday (June 15, 2022) by Congress and should cause a drop in revenue for states in the region of R$ 17.2 billion.
“If sanctioned, there will be an immediate loss of R$ 17.2 billion for the Northeast, mainly affecting health, education, culture, public security and social assistance”said the governors in a note.
The governors of the Northeast met this Thursday (June 16). Here’s the note published after the event (134 KB).
The limit for collecting the tax should be sanctioned by President Jair Bolsonaro in the coming days and is the government’s bet to contain inflation less than 4 months before the election.
“Such a measure is ineffective and reveals the concern to maintain Petrobras’ high profits and the income of its shareholders, thus allowing the continued scrapping of refining assets”say the governors.
According to them, it is important to say that the “principally responsible” by fuel prices is the current import price parity policy, over which no governor has the ability to intervene.
Representatives from 7 States attended the meeting:
- Paulo Camara (PE);
- Paulo Sérgio Velten Pereira (MA);
- João Azevedo (PB);
- Regina Sousa (PI);
- Fátima Bezerra (RN);
- Eliane Aquino, deputy governor (SE).
