HS Vantaa The swimmers of the swimmers already found their way to the Vantaa inland swimming pool: “He just cried when the itching was so painful”

Lake scabies tortures swimmers in Vantaa both at the Leppäkorvi inland swimming pool and at the Vetokannas beach.

Week then Susanna-Catharina Hakasaaren The skin of a 12-year-old girl was full of bangs after a swimming trip. The swimming place was the old familiar Leppäkorvi inland swimming pool, which the family has been visiting for several years in the summer.

“However, the pimples disappeared, so I let it be,” says Hakasaari.

The other day, however, the same thing happened again. Now the pimples were worse than the last time.

“The child woke up the next morning to a terrible itching, and during the day there were more and more patties. In the evening, he just cried when the itching was so painful. ”

Antihistamine or cortisone cream didn’t help at all, and the night went cold baths on my feet while sleeping.

In the morning, Hakasaari took the child to the doctor and this confirmed the suspicion: The cause of the itching is very likely lake scabies.

The child the discomfort is caused to man by a harmless but embarrassing larvae of the sucking worm. The worm has made a mistake about its target and thought man was a water bird.

Sucking worms usually wait for their destination in the conch, and migrate from there to waterfowl at a convenient time. If a person hits the spot, it will try to penetrate the human skin. The larvae are unable to progress in the skin but cause an itchy bang when trying.

Not everyone responds to lake scab in the same way. Someone can swim in the same water without getting any symptoms when another night is spent changing cold rolls.

This is how lake scabies was warned at Vetokannas beach in 2018.

Vantaa the health inspector of the Environment Agency Seija Kiiski heard for the first time on Monday while waiting for announcements from people in an email. In addition to Leppäkorvi, there had been reports of symptoms from Vetokannas beach.

“Lake scabies is not studied in bathing water, so the environmental center relies on information provided by local residents,” says Kiiski.

If there are reports, the reason will be announced on the beach bulletin boards. The notice was taken to Leppäkorvi beach on Monday, it has already been taken to Vetokannas before.

The other day, there was no announcement in Leppäkorvi, so Hakasaari decided to ask on Facebook if other people had had similar experiences.

“I was surprised at how many responded that they had been swimming there and had similar bangs.”

Several respondents had thought the bites were stinging or mosquito bites.

“The daughter’s feet were under water all the time during the swim, and no insect bites under the water.”

Immediately after coming out of the water, the daughter wrapped her towel over and the family drove home.

Traction there have been lake scabies on the beach before, but not in the Leppäkorvi inland swimming pool. It is not possible to know where the caterpillar found its way to the inland swimming pool, but it is most likely brought by a bird.

“Bathing in natural waters involves certain risks. The water can cause lake scabies or the water can contain pathogens. When the heat is warming up and the bathing water is warming up, there are phenomena that are not desired, ”says Seija Kiiski.

According to Kiiske, it is also not possible to know when you can swim on the beaches again without fear of larvae.

“We don’t have the tools to determine how many larvae of a sucking worm are in the water at a given time.”

Once a lake scabies has been in the water, it can occur at other times. Worms live in the shells of the lake and from there they can splash into the water from time to time.

Since scabies is not dangerous to humans, swimming on the beach is not completely prohibited. If someone wants to swim in the waters of Leppäkorvi or Vetokannas, Kiiski recommends avoiding spawning in the coastal waters, because the larvae live there.

“Wading is not recommended, you should go straight into the deep water.”

After bathing, it is also important to go straight to the outdoor shower and dry yourself immediately with a coarse towel to prevent the worms from getting on the skin.

If the scabies comes, it usually heals quickly. The itching lasts from a few hours to a few days, and the pimples heal in a couple of weeks.

Hakasaaren the daughter is already a little better, as the doctor prescribed her a stronger antihistamine and cortisone ointment.

“He announced that he would never want to go swimming again,” says Hakasaari.
