Husi’s board of directors returned the savings program to preparation, so that in the next couple of weeks they will try to get more money from Helsinki and the welfare regions.
Helsinki and Uusimaa’s hospitals can’t finally breathe a sigh of relief yet, but huge savings have yet to be rolled out.
In its Monday’s meeting, Husi’s board of directors unanimously decided to return, for example, the savings list regarding the termination of emergency services in Malmi, Lohja and Porvoo to a new preparation.
This does not yet mean that the savings have been canceled once and for all. The government requires that additional funding be negotiated with the city of Helsinki and the welfare regions immediately, so that all the savings do not have to be implemented.
In its meeting, the coalition board nevertheless committed itself to ensure that Husi’s budget does not remain in deficit.
In other words, if there is not enough additional money coming out of Helsinki and the welfare regions, the government has promised to look for a sufficient number of savings targets and give them its blessing in the coming weeks. The plan is to do this already at the next meeting on October 17, but before then, more detailed calculations will be made on the consequences of possible savings.
So the politicians did not give their permission to close the emergency rooms, but still left the back door open so that this can be decided later.
Hus has calculated that, with the current funding, it should find savings for next year totaling around 95 million euros.
Emergency department closures are planned in a situation where emergency departments are extremely congested. With them, the operation of the Lohja maternity hospital, for example, would also practically end.
Cuts have also been planned for, for example, research funding and personnel benefits.
Finally, Husi’s next year’s budget will be decided by the group meeting in December.
After the Social Security reform, the state finances social and health services in the four welfare areas of Helsinki and Uusimaa. These, in turn, provide funding to Hus.
Hus has previously held negotiations with the state, Helsinki and the welfare regions about its funding.
