Joice Hasselmann and Alexandre Frota were elected alongside the president in 2018; as opposition, both were left out
The president Jair Bolsonaro celebrated the expansion of his party, the PL, in the Chamber of Deputies. In a conversation with supporters in front of Palácio da Alvorada, at dawn on Monday (3.Oct.2022), he mocked the votes received by his former allies, the federal deputies Joyce Hasselmann (PSDB-SP) and Alexandre Frota (PSDB-SP), in the election.
“Does anyone know if Joice Hasselmann was reelected? Does anyone know if Alexandre Frota was reelected?”, he questioned in a joking tone and received shouts of “no” as an answer.
Alongside Bolsonaro, in 2018, Hasselmann received 1 million votes for the Chamber. This year, she had 13,679 and was not reelected.
Frota, on the other hand, ran for state deputy in these elections. He received 24,224 votes and was left out of Alesp (São Paulo Legislative Assembly).
Bolsonaro also mentioned that, if re-elected, he will be able to appoint 2 more ministers to the STF (Supreme Federal Court). Ministers Rosa Weber and Ricardo Lewandowski will retire in the next 4 years. Today, there are 2 chosen in the Court: André Mendonça and Nunes Marques.
BENCH IN THE CHAMBER
The PL will have the largest bench in the Chamber in 2023. With 99 deputies elected on Sunday (2.Oct), the increase was 23 congressmen in relation to the current bench.
Lula’s party federation managed to elect 79 deputies, an increase of 3 seats compared to the sum that PT, PC do B and PV had before.

In addition to the political importance of achieving a significant result in the election for the Chamber, 95% of the resources of the Party Fund –used to maintain the parties month after month– are distributed according to the number of votes to deputies and candidates elected in the Chamber.
If the party does not meet the requirements to fulfill the performance clause (read more in the infographic below), it does not have access to this money.
The largest caucuses also receive the largest share of the special fund that finances electoral campaigns and television time, in addition to occupying the most important positions in the House, impacting the president’s governability.
