The board of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) announced this Monday the appointment of Pablo Hernández de Cos as the next general director as of July 1, 2025 and for five years, a position for which He started as a favorite.
As reported by the BIS this Monday, Hernández de Cos, who was governor of the Bank of Spain until last June, will replace Agustín Carstens in the BIS, who ends his term at the end of June 2025. The Bank for International Settlements recognized the contribution of the outgoing CEO and thanked him for continuing his leadership until the end of his term.
The council highlighted the “significant” transformation and “strength” of the BIS during this term and that it has developed an “ambitious” innovation strategy. The head of the BIS board, François Villeroy de Galhau, said it was “essential” to find an “excellent” leader to succeed Carstens, who has been “extremely successful in leading the transformation of the BIS in these challenging times.” Hernández de Cos has “remarkable” capacity and global experience, he highlighted.
Hernández de Cos (Madrid, 1971) has a doctorate in Economics and is specialized in macroeconomics, taxation, monetary policy and financial stability. During his time as governor of the Bank of Spain, he has also been, among other positions, member of the governing council of the European Central Bank (ECB), president of the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision, member of the Financial Stability Council and of the group of governors of the BIS and vice president of the Financial Stability Council of the Spanish Macroprudential Authority (Amcesfi). Currently, he is a professor at the IESE Business School, as well as at Bruegel and the Peterson Institute for International Economics.
