This year’s Miami Grand Prix ended for the first time with Landon Norris on the top step of the podium in Formula 1, just like his teammate Oscar Piastri did in Hungary. Two successes that demonstrated the constant growth of McLaren, which before the summer break also contributed to the Woking team reaching and occupying the second position in the Constructors’ standings.
Yet, especially in the Austrian, Belgian and Hungarian GPs, Norris could have aimed again for the second victory of his career. A goal that the British driver failed to achieve mainly due to his own mistakes, such as openly admitted by Norris himself especially at the end of the Spielberg weekend following the contact with Max Verstappen, or another mistake of his in Belgium, not to mention the team play at the Hungaroring which favoured Piastri’s victory.
Occasions in which the McLaren driver has admitted his guilt, but in this regard the advice has come Johnny Herbert. The Englishman, winner of 3 GPs in F1, has in fact suggested to his compatriot to be less vulnerable and not to admit his guilt publicly: “The psychological aspect of this sport is difficult – explained Michael Schumacher’s former teammate in a statement reported by formule1.nl – in Hungary, Lando probably felt that the decision was not the right one, in Spa he ended up in the gravel after a bad start. The last two races were against him, while his teammate won once and was on the podium. Lando is very honest and that is to be commended. But I think he should keep his feelings to himself, not share them with the whole world.. Because it’s something that other drivers will try to take advantage of. Lando is under pressure, but as a GP winner, he should be able to handle it.”
