A new contingent of Cuban doctors is arriving in Calabria. There are 70 white coats who are preparing at home to arrive in Italy: the bureaucratic procedures for the transfer will begin in June. These are mainly emergency-urgency specialists, but there are also gynecologists, orthopedists, radiologists, cardiologists, paediatricians.. The Calabrian governor, Roberto Occhiuto, made this known by publishing, in an Instagram story, an excerpt of the meeting with the head of the delegation of Caribbean professionals with whom, Occhiuto said, “the patients are satisfied”. The doctors, for their part, “are very happy, they work well and the population is beautiful”, underlined the Cuban delegate.
In Calabria, currently, 274 doctors from the Caribbean island are in service, some of whom will be active in the region from the beginning of 2023. With the new colleagues, the number will reach 344. These are white coats of different specialties, which have made it possible to keep some structures open where the lack of staff would have forced the Region to suspend activities.
“The Cuban doctors in Calabria represent a great success: their Italian colleagues and patients are very happy with the work they are doing, for the spirit of service and also for the empathy they have in carrying out their tasks. They are making a great contribution to our healthcare system”, Occhiuto tells Adnkronos Salute. Regarding the arrival in the Region of another 70 Cuban doctors, the governor explains: “In the month of June our structures will take care of all the bureaucratic procedures and, if there are no problems, we will have the new Caribbean white coats in our Region by the end of July“.
“This new contingent will be used mostly in the emergency rooms of our hospitals“, underlines Occhiuto, highlighting that “at the same time the Region is holding many competitions to hire doctors on a permanent basis. They are doing well, but in this particular historical phase it is difficult to find white coats throughout the national territory. For this reason we will continue to make use of the services of Cuban doctors as long as necessary.”
