The event organized by Alpine on the eve of the Saudi Arabian GP, in which the 2012 Lotus E20 raced through the streets of Riyadh with two women at the wheel, did nothing but rekindle the ‘pink’ hope of being able to finally review one woman engaged in Formula 1. If we exclude the companies of Lella Lombardi in the mid-70s, during which the Piedmontese managed to compete the record number of 12 GPs – becoming the only woman to win a point – the female presence in the Circus has officially been absent since 1992: on that occasion, it was Giovanna Amati groped to qualify for a race, failing the target with Brabham.
In 2019, however, the entry of women into the world of motor sport was further favored by the establishment of the W Series, all-female single-seater category. With some drivers who have also recently joined the academies of the various Circus teams, the return of a woman to F1 could therefore actually be closer. The first to hope for this step is the seven-time world champion Lewis Hamiltonwho expressed his opinion during a meeting with the students of the Mulberry Schools Trust Group: “You can 100% become a racing driver – the British replied to a question posed by a student – we also have the W Series which, at the moment, is bringing many great female drivers. I hope that at least one, or some of them, eventually make it to Formula 1 ″.
