The presentation of the new W13 officially inaugurated Mercedes’ 2022. Even during the unveil of the last creature of the Brackley team, however, there was no lack of references to the chaotic and controversial final of the last championship. However, the events in Abu Dhabi did not only concern Max Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton and the now former F1 Race Director Michael Masi. Unfortunately, Williams’ standard bearer also suffered serious consequences on a personal level from what happened on the track at Yas Marina Nicholas Latifi. With his mistake, the Canadian favored the entry of the Safety Car and – consequently – the unraveling of the events that pushed Verstappen towards the title.
In recent weeks Latifi has repeatedly explained that he has received intolerable threats and insults following the final race of the last championship, so much so that in some circumstances it was necessary to resort to the use of private security. An unacceptable scenario that intersects with the delicate issue of violence through social networks and mental difficulties related to having to endure immense pressures that many sportsmen are forced to live. On the sidelines of the launch of the new Mercedes, both Hamilton and George Russell, Latifi’s former partner in Williams, spoke on the matter to express their total support for the colleague.
“I have been in contact with Nicholas. He has my full support and I know how difficult it can be to be in these situations – Hamilton said – I think it’s important for him to know that he has the support of the people around him “. The same opinion has been shown George Russell: “I felt really bad for Nicholas. He is an extraordinary guy. He has put in a lot of hard work and progressed a lot. Mistakes happen. I know firsthand how difficult it was to drive that Williams. He didn’t deserve to get what he got at all, so surely more needs to be done“.
