The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have released security camera video obtained during operations in Gaza that allegedly shows Hamas political leader Yahya Sinwar fleeing with his family through one of the militia's tunnels days after the massacre on Israeli territory.
The black and white footage shows a man resembling the terrorist leader being led through underground passages alongside a woman and three children. This is considered the first media collected by the Israeli Army since the start of the war.
Israel accuses Sinwar of being the mastermind of the unprecedented October 7 attack on the country, an event that triggered the long-running conflict in the Middle East, now in its fifth month.
Army spokesman Daniel Hagari said the IDF discovered video from a security camera during an operation in one of the tunnels, without giving further details about the location. “The images show Hamas leader and mass murderer Yahya Sinwar fleeing with his children and one of his wives. Then he escaped with his family from an underground tunnel to a secure compound he had previously built,” Hagari said.
According to the Israeli Army spokesman, the content obtained was filmed on October 10, three days after Hamas carried out the massacre in southern Israel, which killed around 1,200 people, most of them civilians.
The IDF also released another video showing troops running through a tunnel where Sinwar, his family and other senior Hamas officials hid amid the war. The tunnel has two bathrooms, an equipped kitchen, a sleeping area and a separate bedroom that allegedly belonged to the Palestinian militia leader himself, where soldiers found a safe with millions of shekels – Israel's official currency – and dollars in cash, according to revealed the newspaper The Times of Israel.
Earlier this month, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said Sinwar was “moving from hideout to hideout” and was no longer leading the group's military operations in Gaza. “He has now become a terrorist running away from being the leader of Hamas” in the Palestinian territory, Gallant said, without going into detail about the terrorist’s alleged current location.
Sinwar joined Hamas when Sheikh Ahmad Yassin founded the militia in 1987, around the time of the first intifada. The group's most relevant name is currently known for its secrecy and has not been seen publicly since October 7th.
