All F1 single-seaters from the 2018 season have a new driver protection system Halo. A security device wanted by FIA which, after being tested in the various tests carried out by the teams since 2018, has been made mandatory not only in Formula 1 but also in Formula 2.
In the F1 race in Great Britain, the Halo contributed to the safety of the Chinese driver Guanyu Zhou who ran into a terrible accident where the roll-bar gave up on the Alfa Romeo.
Halo
F1 Halo | WHAT IS THAT – The Halo is a safety structure (a curved bar with supports) placed to protect the rider’s head developed by Ferrari. In particular it is a roll-bar in titanium covered with carbon fiber installed in front of the pilot’s head. The Halo in fact was designed and wanted by the FIA to ensure a greater rider head protection in case of large debris, such as a flying tire.
In theory this device should avoid tragic events like what happened Jules Bianchi in 2014 when he lost his life in Suzuka, after losing control, his crazed single-seater slipped under a rescue vehicle on the track.
HALO AS IT IS MADE Titan
The Halo is a very resistant element, made of titanium, capable of withstanding a weight of 5,400 kg and an impact over 200 km / h with a tire. The first version of the halo presented in 2016 weighed 6 kg while the final version of 2018 weighed 9 kg.
For the installation it was necessary to make a major change to reinforce the body (weight increase of about 6 kg) where 3 attachments with high structural strength were prepared (12 tons vertical load for 5 seconds)
The halo is made of titanium made by three manufacturers chosen by the FIA: CP Autosport (Germany), the English STT and the Italian VSystem
F1 head protection because they don’t like it
Hardly anyone initially liked the Halo, neither the protagonists on the track nor the public following the Formula 1. It is an anime judgment that this device distorts the F1as if it caged the pilots while also limiting their visibility.
Variant of the Halo, Shied a fairing
In free practice at Silverstone in 2017 Sebastian Vettel on his Ferrari he had tried a variant of the Halo, a device called Shield (fuck below) that is on a sort of sturdy polycarbonate dome in front of the pilot’s head. This last device, however, was immediately rejected by the German driver who complained of poor front visibility (distorted and blurred vision) with driving problems.
Among the skeptics there was also Niki Lauda he had stated “This system distorts the very essence of racing cars”. Other former pilots like Jackie Stewart they had welcomed the system, comparing it to the introduction at the time of seat belts which had aroused the same criticism and then became the norm also on mass-produced road cars.
HALO VISTA ON BOARD F1
A small revolution that many insiders though they did not immediately sharein fact, the International Federation has launched the obligation despite the negative opinion of 9 out of 10 teams. The decision was made a Geneva by the Federation on the occasion of the Strategy Group on 19 July 2017.
