The government of Guyana reaffirmed this Tuesday (16) its commitment to “a peaceful solution” to the territorial dispute with Venezuela over the Essequibo region, and praised the UN Security Council's declaration on this issue.
“Guyana is committed to the peaceful resolution of the dispute with Venezuela, in full compliance with international law, through the process of the International Court of Justice, and expresses its gratitude to the members of the Security Council for their valuable consideration of this issue of great importance . for both countries and the region”, says the statement.
In the same note, the government expressed the hope that the Security Council declaration “will contribute to the maintenance of regional peace and security and to ensuring that Latin America and the Caribbean remains an area of peace”.
On Monday (15), the UN Security Council issued a statement in which its members expressed concern about “the possible escalation of tension between Venezuela and Guyana”.
The Security Council urged the parties to “exercise maximum restraint”, remembering their obligations to comply with the provisional measures order issued by the ICJ on December 1, 2023.
Furthermore, the body highlighted the importance of maintaining regional peace and security and ensuring that the Latin American and Caribbean region remains an area of peace.
According to the Security Council, the parties need to “resolve their differences by peaceful means and fulfill their obligations under international law and the Charter of the United Nations.”
The importance of defending the principles of respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity and the prohibition, by any party, of the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of another State was also highlighted.
The crisis between Caracas and Georgetown was revived with the recent promulgation by Venezuela of the Organic Law for the Defense of the so-called Essequiba Guyana. This law aims to provide a legal framework for Venezuelan plans to annex the Essequibo region, covering approximately 160,000 square kilometers, rich in oil and natural resources and under the control of Guyana.
