United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said today, Wednesday, that the repercussions of the Russian military operation in Ukraine for the world are getting worse, and it has affected 1.6 billion people.
Presenting the second United Nations report on the consequences of the crisis, the Secretary-General said, “Its impact on food security, energy and finance is comprehensive, dangerous and accelerating…and threatens people all over the world to unleash an unprecedented wave of hunger and misery, creating social and economic chaos.”
The crisis contributed to the rise in the prices of essential materials in the world, such as energy and grain. It also threatens to cause a global food crisis with many countries relying on grains exported by Ukraine and Russia.
Since the operation began on February 24, exports of grain from the two countries, which account for about a third of the world’s wheat exports, have stopped.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees said on Wednesday that more than seven million people have crossed the border from Ukraine since the start of the Russian military operation there.
