Gregorio Luri wants to rid the school of mediocrity and recover the desire for excellence. That is the purpose of its latest editorial installment, ‘Forbidden to repeat’, which is on its way to becoming another success like ‘School is not an amusement park’, its previous title, now in its sixth edition. “For someone to choose a book about education on the shelf of a bookstore is very important,” he warns in the program. COPE Catalunya and Andorra talks.
Luri’s books sell because education is a problem in Spainas reflected in the PISA results. «We are committed to following the Finnish model when we have the model closer, in Soria, an example of educational excellence», he emphasizes. Our sin was believing that the new should replace, by system, what was already good: «We must incorporate the new if it is proven to be good. “Innovation makes sense in the business world, but not in education,” observes the philosopher and pedagogue.
Catalonia is like Extremadura according to the PISA Report while other studies place it between Ceuta and Melilla: «Catalonia lives prisoner of a dogma: that the Catalan school is a successful school,” says Luri. The reality is different: “30 percent of fifteen-year-old Catalan students leave school without reading comprehension, unable to solve elementary mathematical operations and write.” The breaking point of the system occurs at the age of nine, between third and fourth grade: “It is when you go from learning to read to learning by reading… which is understanding what you read,” explains Luri.
Equity is not only access to education, it depends on the family of each student: «More than the fact that young people read, I am concerned about their vocabulary level. Coming from a family with culture and reading habits is not the same as coming from a family without those resources: it is the difference between children “who listen to two thousand words per hour to only listen to six hundred,” he emphasizes. Another factor is the preparation of the teachers: “The important thing is not that the child reads Don Quixote, but that the teacher has read it.” Also the networks that give the student the false feeling that knowledge is within reach of a click… “Everything is on Google except the most important thing: the criterion of discernment, being able to differentiate between data and opinion,” says Luri. .
