cleaning tip of the weekThe house could use a major overhaul once in a while. Cleaning expert Marja Middeldorp therefore helps to solve everyday problems. This week: removing stains.
Now that Marja has become a grandmother (she revealed it in an earlier episode), she has more to do with baby spots. ,,I have already forgotten many things from the time my son was young, but it is recognizable again. Something comes out of every hole: snot, spit, I don’t know what to do. Then I sometimes think: oh dear, my sweater, or the light sofa. Young children leave a trail of stains in the house.”
Through trial and error, the cleaning expert has discovered a number of means that best help her to remove the stains. “Certainly the spit of babies can carry a sour odor from the milk. In any case, I have a solution for that if you act quickly.”
baking soda
“If you are dealing with babies at home, baking soda is a great remedy. You can buy jars of it in the supermarket. Put one in your bag so you always have it with you. If there is a stain on the sofa, on the carpet or on clothing, take a damp cloth and put some baking soda on it. It is important to intervene immediately, so do not let the stain soak in. Dab the cloth on the stain, or rub very gently – as if you were petting the baby yourself.”
If you act immediately, the stain will soon disappear, Marja assures. ,,Always dry it with a dry cloth. The smell is also removed. So you don’t have to be afraid to come to a party with a smelly jacket or whatever. I will always carry baking soda in my pocket from now on. By the way, I don’t use it for anything else, only for baby’s spit stains.”
Other stains that children cause
When the child gets older, a solution for lactic acid is no longer enough. Then the food probably flies in all directions. “Of course, always provide bibs and a cloth that is soft enough for the skin,” advises Marja. “But if you’re not on time and you get a stain in the furniture, you have to work with big guns.”
Suppose clothing or furniture has been stained, take a bucket, fill it with warm water and add two or three tablespoons of soaking liquid
What Marja does not use in any case are stain removers. “There are hundreds of bottles for removing stains. Then you have one for mango and it won’t work for banana. Yes, bye. I’d rather stick to soaking agent. Suppose clothing or furniture has been stained, grab a bucket, fill it with warm water, and add two or three tablespoons of the soaking agent. The water does not have to be hot, make it so warm that you can still keep your hand in it. When it comes to clothes, you put the clothes in for a few hours before you put them in the wash.”
It’s a little different with furniture. ,, Take a cloth, put it in a bucket with soaking agent and then dab on the spot where the stain is. Then take another cloth, dampen it with clean water and cover the stain. This way it stays moist and the product can really soak in! Check after an hour or two to see if it’s gone. If you leave the cloth on too long, the carpet or wherever that stain is will get a little grubby. I usually grab a hair dryer afterwards to dry it. Not on a hot setting, of course. Speaking of a hair dryer, I have to go to the hairdresser now. You’ll be fine with those spots, won’t you?”
