Meta is developing a new search engine based on Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology, which it plans to incorporate into its Meta AI ‘chatbot’ as an alternative to other search engines that currently power it, Google Search and Microsoft Bing, according to The Information .
Meta AI is a tool initially powered by the multimodal language model Llama 3.2, whichIt can be used on the company’s social networks and messaging applications, such as WhatsApp, Messenger or Instagram. It is also available in its second generation Ray-Ban Meta glasses and has a dedicated website.
At the time of its announcement, this ‘chatbot’ was integrated with Microsoft’s search engine, Bing, thanks to which it could offer “more timely and updated responses”, as well as access search information in real time.
In April, with the update of Meta AI to the Llama 3 model, which is the one that now powers it, Meta announced the integration of search results from Google Search to its chatbot‘, so it currently works with both search engines.
Meta has been developing its own search engine for months, with the aim that users have another search alternative to the one currently offered with Microsoft and Googleas recently confirmed by The Information.
This medium has indicated that the leader of this search engine project is the senior engineering manager of Meta Xueyuan Su and that it is part of the work that began about eight months ago and announced in the summer, with web crawling technology, as as Engadget remembers.
It was then that Meta noted that it had begun working with web crawlers dedicated to analyzing the content of applications or websites visited with its different services and platforms.
Among them is Meta-ExternalAgent, which is responsible for analyzing the web for use cases “such as training AI models or improving products through direct indexing of content” although, at the time of its announcement, The technology company did not indicate what it was going to use them for.
It is worth remembering that it is not the only technology company that has opted to create its own search engine for its ‘chatbot’, since in July OpenAI announced that it was testing the prototype of its search engine, SearchGPT.
