This Monday (28), Google announced that it will no longer allow Russian state-owned media to show ads. The decision is similar to the one announced by the technology giant’s video subsidiary, YouTube, on Saturday (27).
According to CNN Business, the announcement marks the latest blow to Russian-linked media amid a wave of criticism leveled at Big Tech platforms last week for allowing monetization to continue despite Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“In response to the war in Ukraine, we are pausing Google’s monetization of Russian state-funded media on our platforms,” Google said in a statement to CNN. “We are actively monitoring new developments and will take further action if necessary.”
With the intensity of the crisis in Ukraine growing, social media companies are struggling to contain Russian state propaganda and disinformation. Also on Friday, the Russian government decided to “partially restrict” access to Facebook in the country after accusing the platform of illegal censorship.
