With a little delay compared to the publication of Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut on Steam and Epic Games Store, Digital Foundry has released a video comparison between the recently released PC version and the 2021 PS5 version.
Clearly the PC version can boast a series of improvements that make it superior to the console version, hardware permitting, and in general this conversion was promotedalbeit with some reservations, such as the fact that the quality of the textures is the same as the PS5 version (even with the highest preset), which in itself was not one of the strong points of the production.
Digital Foundry noted that the game, as well as other PC ports of Nixxes, can saturate PCI Express bandwidth. The more there is, the more stable the framerate, with those with a PC Express 3.0 8x motherboard likely to experience unstable frametime. Furthermore, net of the absence of stuttering for the compilation of shaders, there is a problem with the camera that sees the updating of the movement not synchronized with the frame-rate, which will hopefully be resolved with post-launch updates. Tech enthusiasts also didn’t appreciate it the use of VRAM and the absence of an indicator that shows on the screen how much is exploited.
On the positive side, the PC version of Ghost of Tsushima also runs cutscenes at 60 or more fps, whereas on PS5 they are locked to 30 fps regardless of the graphics mode selected. Another positive note is that the checkerboard upscaling of the PlayStation version is replaced here with more up-to-date technologies that offer better results, such as NVIDIA’s DLSS.
The PC version also features some improvements in key areas, such as better foliage draw distance, shadow quality and screen-space reflections, as well as the ability to reach a much higher framerate, compared to PS5.
And if that’s not enough, thanks to the Beyond Dreams mod it is possible to enjoy Ghost of Tsushima in 8K quality with DLSS3.
