Politics will sink the ban on the sale of cars with combustion engines starting from 2035, after the vote in favor in the seat of the European Parliament? According to Germany’s finance minister, the liberal democrat Christian Lindnerthere is still room for a resounding “no”.
According to what was said at the Industry Day, organized by the Federation of German Industry (BDI) in Berlin, “Germany will not support the European Parliament’s ban on combustion engines starting in 2035“. This was reported by several European press agencies. Lindner pointed out that “some regions of the world are not yet ready for the electric car”And that, with a ban, the combustion engine will not be developed further, at least not in Europe and Germany. This, according to Lindner, that would be a mistake.
However, the ruling coalition in Berlin does not seem to have a unanimous position. In fact, the Minister for the Environment Steffi Lemke (Verdi) stated, on the contrary, that “the federal government fully supports the proposal by the Commission and the European Parliament that, starting in 2035, new passenger cars and light commercial vehicles on sale must have zero emissions“. In short, she is a tough nut to crack for the German government, which turns out to be disunited at a very delicate moment for her industry. Volkswagen, Mercedes and BMW are watching, and who knows if in the coming months they will take more conciliatory positions with one or the other soul of the government.
Lindner is convinced that the combustion engine must be kept for certain market nichesand that a permanence of petrol and diesel would not in any case jeopardize the German “leadership” in the field of electric cars.
