A German IS woman who allegedly let a five-year-old Yazidi girl die of thirst in Iraq was sentenced Monday to ten years in prison. A Munich court has found Jennifer W. guilty of membership of a terrorist organization, committing crimes against humanity, attempted war crimes and complicity in attempted murder. Report that German media. Justice had demanded a life sentence.
The thirty-year-old woman from the German state of Lower Saxony traveled to Iraq in 2014. There she joined Islamic State and married an IS fighter. The couple enslaved a Yazidi woman, whose five-year-old daughter died in 2015 – according to the court at the hands of W. and her husband. The man allegedly chained the girl outside in the blazing sun.
W. must have known “from the start” that the child was in mortal danger, but she “did nothing to help the girl,” said one of the judges. On the contrary: W. often urged her husband to take action. The child died of thirst. With her IS membership, W. supported the “extermination of the Yazidi religion” and the “enslavement of the Yazidi people”, according to the court, which also punishes her for membership of a terrorist organization.

W. was arrested in 2018 on his way to Syria. Her (now ex) husband is also in prison. He has to answer to a court in Frankfurt on suspicion of, among other things, genocide and crimes against humanity.
The start of the process was world news in 2019. This was partly because human rights lawyer Amal Clooney, the wife of American actor George Clooney, was part of the team that represented the mother of the Yazidi girl. Nobel Peace Prize winner in 2018, Nadia Murad, has also spoken out about the case. She previously called W.’s persecution “great” and “important for all Yazidi survivors.”
