The German Chancellor, Olaf Scholzurged Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday to seek a diplomatic solution to the war in Ukraine that involves the cessation of hostilities, the withdrawal of Russian troops and respect for Ukrainian territorial integrity.

The Foreign Minister’s spokesman, Steffen Hebestreitreported that both leaders spoke by phone for 90 minutes, after Scholz last week spoke with the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky.

“In view of the seriousness of the military situation and the consequences of the war in Ukraine, the foreign minister urged the Russian president to seek a diplomatic solution as soon as possible,” the spokesman said in a statement.
“This must be based on a ceasefire, a complete withdrawal of Russian troops and respect for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine,” he added.

The foreign minister also stressed that if Russia takes “additional steps” to annex Ukrainian territories, this will not go unanswered and will not gain international recognition under any circumstances.
Both leaders discussed the situation around the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant and Scholz emphasized that it is crucial to protect the security of the facility, for which he urged to avoid escalations and immediately apply the measures proposed by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). ).

In relation to the global food crisis, the foreign minister stressed the importance of the agreement sponsored by the United Nations and Turkey to allow the export of Ukrainian grain by sea through a corridor in the Black Sea.
Scholz “appealed to the Russian president not to discredit this agreement and to continue to implement it in its entirety,” the statement said, according to which the foreign minister also asked Putin that Ukrainian prisoners of war be treated in accordance with international humanitarian law.
