A tragic accident happened in Mallorca on Thursday. Two tourists were killed by lightning while on the beach. Both died.
Mallorca – Two tourists died in a tragic incident on the popular holiday island of Mallorca in Spain on Thursday. The two men, a Swiss and a German, were struck by lightning on Cala Mesquida beach in the northeast of the island. This is already the second fatal accident due to a thunderstorm in a very short time. Only recently was a girl killed by a hailstone, also in the north-east of Mallorca.
Mallorca: Swiss and Germans die in a lightning strike on the beach
As the police told the Spanish newspaper El País confirmed the two tourists were with a group of other people on the beach when a storm hit the area. The 65-year-old Swiss was killed immediately by the lightning, while the 52-year-old German was seriously injured. Then a lifeguard who was on duty at the time rushed to help the two. He found the Swiss dead and then tried to revive the German tourist. But he also succumbed to his serious injuries a short time later.
Upon arrival, police briefly considered closing the beach after the incident. Ultimately, however, this was no longer necessary because the storm subsided relatively quickly. A short time earlier, at around 3:30 a.m., the Spanish National Meteorological Service issued a yellow alert for the area due to approaching thunderstorms and rain. During the storm there were numerous lightning strikes in the northeast of Mallorca. (na)
A German recently went swimming in Mallorca and died shortly afterwards, presumably of heart problems.
