Georgia intends to apply for membership of the European Union, chairman of the Georgian ruling party Irakli Kobahidze told a news conference on Wednesday. The news agency AFP and the Russian report this news agency Tass.

Kobahidze, the leader of the Georgian Dream Party, calls for the EU to process the application as soon as possible and to grant Georgia candidate status.

On Monday Ukraine, which is under attack from Russia, made a similar decision. President Volodymyr Zelenskyi demanded immediate membership for its country through special procedures.

High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell said on Monday that Russia’s pressure on Georgia could increase.

Relations between Russia and Georgia are very tense. Russia invaded Georgia in 2008, and after a brief war, the rebel territories of South Ossetia and Abkhazia declared independence. Russia has recognized the independence of the regions.

Georgia has also long aspired to become a member of the military alliance NATO. Georgia’s and Ukraine’s aspirations to join NATO were expressed at the 2008 NATO summit in Bucharest. Russia opposed the countries’ membership.
