The nightmare season continues
It still can’t shine there‘Alpine, with the difficulties that promptly recurred also during the qualifying for the Canadian Grand Prix, the first after the announcement of the interruption of the relationship between the team and Esteban Ocon which will materialize at the end of the championship. The French driver will start from twentieth and last spot on the starting gridthis is due to the five penalty positions that the #31 has to pay for the contact that occurred between him and his teammate in Monaco during the first lap.
The wish of rain
Regarding the latter, Pierre Gaslythe Frenchman managed to get into Q2, but did not go beyond that 15th positioni.e. the last of this qualifying session: “My laps in Q1 and Q2 felt decent today, so I was a bit surprised that in the end it was enough to qualify me in P15 – has explained – the reality is that this was simply what we could extract from the machine Today. Obviously, it is difficult to be satisfied with this result. We know where we are in terms of performance and what areas the car is lacking in, therefore for the moment we must keep our heads down and be patient. The team is working hard to improve the overall package. Until then, we need to maximize what we can get out of the current setup. Tomorrow will not be an easy race for us. I hope for rain and in some opportunities that allow us to get closer to the top 10 and fight for points, given how narrow the central area of the standings is.”
What hindered the passage to Q2?
Gasly is therefore aware of the difficulties the team is experiencing in this period, just like Ocon, with the team having called reserve driver Jack Doohan in his place in FP1. Specifically, the Frenchman had indicated several times how this choice was not a consequence or punishment for the events in Munich: “Today was a very hard-fought session we didn’t do enough to get through to Q2 – has explained – unfortunately I lost a tenth in turns 6 and 7 with another driver in front quite close, and the start of my lap was also compromised by picking up some dirt after going off line on my preparation lap. Tomorrow we will try to do our best and hope it will be a clean race, in which we can optimize the strategy and get closer to the points. It will be tough, but we will do our best.”
