The first race of the weekend at the Red Bull Ring was chaotic and conditioned by the variable weather conditions that gave many twists.
Shortly before the start, a downpour forced the race direction to start behind the safety car, but the worsening conditions forced the interruption of the race with a red flag.
At the restart, the drivers lined up once again behind the safety car and considering the improvement of the track both Bortoleto and Hadrien David decided to enter the pit lane to mount the slicks.
The same move was also made shortly after by poleman Paul Aron. The Estonian then returned to the very late track and gave the first place to Barrichello, while the one who stood out was Kas Haverkort.
The Van Amersfort Racing Dutchman, who started from fourteenth position, made a comeback by overtaking, easily getting rid of his rivals and then hunted for Barrichello and a surprising Pierre-Louis Chovet.
The Frenchman shone as he managed to temporarily take command of operations after getting the better of Barrichello.
The Brazilian then ended up in Haverkort’s sights and the Dutchman didn’t waste too much time to overtake him and get in the wake of Chovet.
The Dutchman’s comeback, however, was interrupted by a new safety car fattening on the track. At the restart, the driver of the VAR team immediately electrocuted the transalpine, thus rising to the command and completing an unexpected comeback.
The Van Amersfoort Racing, then, managed to celebrate a double weight thanks to the second place clawed by Joshua Dufek good at mocking Chovet in the closing bars. The Frenchman, however, managed to get the third step of the podium and thus celebrate a great result.
Championship leader Dino Begaonvic limited the damage in Race 1. The Swedish driver from the Ferrari nursery closed the race in fourth position gaining further points in the standings over Minì, seventh, and over Paul Aron who was forced to retire after a contact with Sebastian Montoya.
The second race of the weekend in Spielberg saw Hadrien David conquer a success never questioned in front of a Dino Beganovic who thanks to this placement further increases his advantage in the standings over Gabriele Minì.
David was always able to control easily despite the race being interrupted on several occasions with the safety car.
The first neutralization occurred in the opening bars when Roman Bilinski and Esteban Masson made contact in turn 7, while the other two occurred following the accidents that occurred between Mari Boya and Dilano van’t Hoff before and the crash in the wall in autonomy of Lorenzo Fluxa then.
Each time David was good at managing the restart in an optimal way, except on the last occasion since the race ended under the safety car.
This last neutralization played against a wild Minì. The ART Grand Prix driver was the author of a spirited comeback from seventh to fourth place and without the safety car in the closing stages he could have undermined Joshua Dufek for the third step of the podium.
Behind the Palermo driver Gabriel Bortoleto finished, while Pierre-Louis Chovet, after the splendid podium obtained in Race 1, finished Race 2 in seventh place behind Durksen and in front of Eduardo Barrichello, Tim Tramnitz and Leonardo Formaroli.
At the end of the Red Bull Ring round Dino Beganovic continues to lead the standings with an important advantage over Minì. The Swede is first with 250 points and sees the title ever closer, while the ART Grand Prix driver is second with 197 points ahead of an unlucky Paul Aron this weekend and remained at 176.
