Genoa – The day after the Letimbro is still swollen with water and debris, but it is no longer the indomitable beast that destroyed the Sanctuary in Savona. And even the Erro that submerged Pontinvrea is no longer scary now that the red alert has ceased (at 6 am yesterday morning). But there are still open wounds, damage to the territory, families evacuated or isolated. And the tragedy of those who, even in other areas of Liguria such as Rossiglione, lost everything in the flood on Monday.
A painful damage count, which began yesterday with the inspection of the President of the Region Giovanni Toti and the Councilor for Civil Protection Giacomo Giampedrone where bad weather hit so hard that it brought the whole community to its knees. «Enough radical chic environmentalism» We are going in spans, for the moment. There is talk of over 10 million euros in damages only for emergency sums, to secure roads, landslide fronts, clean up the villages and resume an almost normal life. The Liguria Region is ready to ask for a state of emergency.
One more day of bad weather
It will still be a day of bad weather in Liguria. For today, forecasts indicate the arrival of stormy north winds and thunderstorms associated with possible hailstorms. In the afternoon the weather situation should improve slightly in the central-eastern part of the region, but not in the Imperia area, where more precipitation is expected. For the moment, no warning has been issued.
Safety interventions
In the meantime, the safety measures in the areas most affected by the storms on Sunday and Monday continue. In the Savona area, the most serious problems were recorded in Santuario and Pontinvrea.
The signs of the flood in Pontinvrea
In the Genoese area, in Rossiglione. At 12 the regional councilor for Civil Protection Giacomo Giampedrone will reach the town to take stock of the situation together with the mayor and the civil protection authorities (here the complete article on the damage caused by bad weather in that area).
Between the Savona area, the hinterland of Genoa, the Valbormida, the Stura and Orba valleys, 10 families have been evacuated, 1 in Savona, 4 in Rossiglione, 5 in Pontinvrea. There are still 17 isolated families in the Santuario area and in the surrounding hamlets, as well as 5 families in Quiliano.
There have been several interruptions in the supply of electricity, in particular in Tiglieto. Enel technicians are working to restore the connections.About 100 people have suffered the interruption of the water supply in Sassello.Several damage has been recorded to the minor road network due to landslides and landslides.
The situation in Pontinvrea
There is no road that has been spared between San Bernardo in Valle and the Sanctuary. And even above the level of via Cimavalle, the Letimbro has taken away pieces of the hill and dragged a bridge downstream. That of the goat, the only connection between the inhabitants of Villa Noli, the residence built in the 19th century by the Savona owner Noli and today it has become a restaurant for major events. “We are on our knees: first Covid, then this” explains Loredana Saccani to the President of the Region. «The bridge went down in a few minutes: we saw the stream drag two huge logs that were placed sideways between the pillars. A few minutes later we saw the bridge crumble ». Now to reach the provincial road, the inhabitants of villa Noli and other houses pass over a bridge 500 meters further downstream, “but resuming work in these conditions is practically impossible”. About fifteen kilometers of curves on a provincial road 12 Pontinvrea is muddy, flooded by the flooding of the Erro and the Rio Oratorio. «The damage to the municipal structures is enormous. The party hall was submerged by mud, the tennis court and the volleyball court have disappeared »says Mayor Matteo Camiciottoli, orange work jacket, showy bandage on his hand. «I ended up in the river with the bulldozer while I was trying to free a ford» he tells Toti and Giampedrone. Now that the rain has stopped in Pontinvrea it is all a comings and goings of excavators and trucks. The few businesses are on their knees. “We’ve lost everything, from the shop to the cars,” cries Emma Falco. His and his brothers’ business is the oldest in the province of Savona. It has withstood two wars and many floods, including that of 1992. “This was worse. Monday morning I risked dying, carried away by the current, I didn’t even manage to get here. And when I did it I found the devastation, “he says, looking inside what remains of the shop. “We hope at least in the contributions.”
Railways and roads
RFI announced that railway traffic on the Genoa-Acqui line has returned to normal: “railway traffic, previously suspended between Campo Ligure and Acqui Terme due to the adverse weather conditions that affected the area, returned to normal after the intervention of RFI who have freed the line and restored its full functionality ”, reads a note.

Both roads still remain closed.
In Piedmont it was reopened the bridge over the Bormida, along the state road 10 “Padana Inferiore” to Alessandria (km 96,500). The closing measure was taken yesterday evening as a precaution given the flood wave of the river.
