Speed cameras, the “Fleximan” case reaches the EU. The defense of Gazzini (FI): “A singular story of resistance to the oppression of a hidden tax”
The MEP Matteo Gazzini took the “Fleximan” case to heart as representative of “a popular emergency” and so, the Forzista decided to question the European Commission regarding the issue of speed cameras. “In an era where theThe European Union is committed to promoting free movement and ensuring road safety, It appears paradoxical that a device designed for safety, the speed camera turns into a vexatious tool used to increase the revenue of local authorities. Lindiscriminate and predatory use of speed cameras caused great exasperation among citizens. The story of “Fleximan” in Veneto, which saws the poles of speed detectors, reflects the general frustration faced with what is perceived as a hidden tax and a limitation of freedom of movement, guaranteed, among other things, also by European treaties” explains the MEP.

It is no secret that, in Italy, speed cameras, often strategically placed – continues Gazzini – have become a significant source of revenue for local authorities. However, when fundraising takes precedence over the goal of road safety, we are faced with a serious problem that requires immediate action.

The bad faith of some local authorities becomes evident when they insert the expected revenue from fines directly into the municipal budget, treating them as a goal to be achieved. If they were really interested in road safety, rather than mere profit, they could adopt measures such as installing speed dissuaders in the areas where speed cameras record the highest number of infringements, or they could intensify the presence of police in these areas. If a speed camera continues to record violations for months or years, it is clear that its primary purpose is to generate revenue, otherwise the public administration would adopt more effective measures to prevent violations and ensure road safety.
Then comes the warning from the Forza Italia MEP to his colleagues in Brussels: “It is therefore fundamental to clarify on the criterion for positioning the speed cameras, on the device used, on the methods of use, on the calibration, on the duration of detection, and on the harmonization of practices with other European countries, so that road safety becomes the only objective again” he concluded MEP Gazzini.
