Time ago Seat has decided to focus mainly on transforming it into an electric mobility brand, thus differentiating itself from Cupra which will instead focus on being present on the EV market. Nonetheless, the idea of abandoning battery-powered cars once and for all never occurred to Seat, which in fact confirmed its intention to develop a low cost electric car which is positioned just below the Cupra range.
Low cost electric Seat
The complementary strategy of the two brands was well explained by Wayne Griffiths, number one of both Seat and Cupra: the group’s focus will remain strong on Cupra in the near future since it is simply more profitablebut the focus will be on Seat again when electrification reaches i low-price segments and there will be adequate demand for such products. This means that a low-cost electric car from Seat has a list price of approximately 20,000 eurossooner or later it will show up on the market, even if we don’t know when yet.
Profitability first and foremost
“My priority is profitability”Griffiths declared to Autocar, suggesting that such a car It’s not an immediate priority for the Seat group as it would not be profitable today. This new model will certainly not be needed to make it clear that Seat will continue to focus on electric cars in the future: just think that the Spanish brand recently invested in substantial restyling of the Ibiza and Arona modelsan important demonstration of how the company is still very committed to investing in Seat models.
Cupra and Seat, forward together
“The Cupra and Seat models will now both live together for at least the next five years, and they will be in perfect harmony because they will not interfere with each other – concluded Griffiths – There is space on the market for both brands and one does not exclude the other, but sometimes it is important to establish what your priorities should be, in order to save your company, your workers and the future”. And precisely for this reason Cupra, which will always be positioned above the mass market but not in the premium segmenttoday represents the focus of the Seat group.
