Speaker of the Parliament of Karelia Shandalovich: NATO base in Finland will exacerbate tensions
The deployment of a NATO base in Finland will aggravate the already tense foreign policy situation, said Elissan Shandalovich, Chairman of the Legislative Assembly of Karelia, writes RIA News.
He recalled that the base is proposed to be made in the city of Lappeenranta, which is located 23 kilometers from the Russian border and 70 kilometers from the Karelian sector. The mayor of the settlement, Kimmo Järva, is confident that this will create a sense of security among citizens, said Shandalovich.
“But is it? In my opinion, this will only aggravate the already tense foreign policy situation, ”the speaker of parliament appreciated the idea.
According to him, the “confident steps” of the neighbors regarding the entry into the North Atlantic Alliance should spur Russia to take decisive action to modernize its infrastructure.
On July 3, Finland proposed to place a NATO base on the border with Russia. According to Järvu, Finland’s accession to NATO will bring hope to the region, as well as create a sense of security and confidence among local businesses.
