The development team of Final Fantasy 14 thought about adding a battle royale mode to his MMO.
In a recent interview with the Japanese site Gamer (transcribed on Reddit), the producer and director Naoki Yoshida talked about the development of the recently added Crystalline Conflict PvP mode.
One idea was a battle royale mode featuring only blue wizards, a unique class that learns skills and spells by battling enemies.
The mode would take place in a large arena with a gradually shrinking battle area, as is typical of the genre. Players would use the blue mage’s learning ability to acquire spells instead of picking up weapons.
However, this idea was abandoned. Another idea was to focus exclusively on eight main trades, but this idea was also abandoned. One reason is that it was believed that players wanted to use their professions in PvP rather than predetermined options.
Crystalline Conflict mode has proved popular with gamers, despite some inconvenient balance changes.
For those who want a battle royale in Final Fantasy, there is always the mobile game Final Fantasy 7: The First Soldier.
