State deputy Janaina Paschoal (PRTB), a pre-candidate for São Paulo’s Senate seat this year, took to social media to criticize President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) for alleged interference in the local dispute. “Why does Bolsonaro want a Senate made of pau-mandado?”, asked the deputy, who was once an ally of the chief executive and is one of the authors of the impeachment request of impeached president Dilma Rousseff (PT).
Tarcísio is a pre-candidate for the state government this year.
Zambelli, also on the social network, said that she is still a pre-candidate for another term in the Chamber of Deputies. The deputy, however, criticized Janaina’s post and waved at the possibility of entering the dispute for the majority position: “It is for these and others that they ask me to consider the Senate”. She also added that she does not consider herself a “mandatory”, “but gratitude does not prescribe and loyalty to Brazil must be above all”. When contacted, Zambelli did not respond until the publication of this text.
To Estadão Janaina said that, when referring to a “Pau-mandado Senate”, she meant that Bolsonaro is fleeing independence and seeks to prioritize parliamentarians who flatter him. “Maybe I’m saying more that he runs away from my independence and deludes himself, thinking that flatterers shield him,” she said.
Janaina was once an ally of Bolsonaro, was even quoted as vice president in the 2018 campaign. She was elected with more than 2 million votes and achieved the largest vote for a parliamentarian in the history of Brazil. Zambelli is part of the president’s shock troops in Congress. While the federal deputy remained faithful to Bolsonarism, migrating to the PL, the state parliamentarian has already made a series of criticisms of the government and even said that she regrets having voted for the president.
An ally of Zambelli, state deputy Gil Diniz (PL) criticized Janaina. “Impressive the ability you have to try to demonstrate a certain ‘independence’ that I don’t know who helps but your own ego!”, he affirmed. The state deputy replied that she is not asking for endorsement or support, but that she said it was “very strange his (Bolsonaro) insistence” on making it unfeasible for the Senate.
Despite the discussion, Janaina said on Twitter that her friendship with Zambelli continues and “nothing will change that”. However, she reinforced her willingness to run for a Senate seat. “I want to make something very clear: I am a pre-candidate for the Senate, even though Carla, Moro, Datena, Skaf, Tício, Mévio and Caio will come!”.
Support
To the Estadão Janaina stated that her pre-candidacy for the Senate “has nothing to do with the president or with Minister Tarcísio”. So much so that, according to her, she met with the then minister in November and insisted that he run for the state government. “I told him he should come, that I would support him, as I am, regardless of whether he supports me,” she said.
The state deputy, however, considers it practically impossible to count on the support of Tarcísio or Bolsonaro. “This signal of all the time trying to launch someone, which the president has been doing – first it was Minister Damares, then he joined with Datena. Then with Skaf, or vice versa. Now he’s been trying to get Carla Zambelli on board – I think these are signs that confirm that.”
Still, she said that she will return to Bolsonaro’s side in this year’s elections, even if this is not reciprocal. “Either it’s him or it’s Lula. Do we have a way out? That third way is dead!”, she added.
Bolsonarist disputes
São Paulo is not the only state with disputes between Bolsonaro candidates for the Senate. In the Federal District, for example, Republicanos announced the pre-candidacy of former minister Damares Alves for the position, which will also be disputed by Flávia Arruda (PL), another former minister of the president. Behind the scenes, the move is seen as pressure for Flávia to give up the seat of the first substitute on her ticket to the Republicans.
Rio de Janeiro is another example. While the PTB wants to launch Daniel Silveira to the Senate, former player Romário (PL), who currently occupies the seat, has already stated that he is Bolsonaro’s candidate.
