The EU states are in principle in agreement that they want to take in Ukrainian refugees – but the agreement must now be implemented by everyone, according to Interior Minister Nancy Faeser.
Berlin – Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser has called for a fair distribution of Ukrainian refugees in the EU and at the same time rejected calls for better coordination by the federal government.
“Since the first day of the war, we have been coordinating the reception and care of the refugees very closely with the federal states,” said the SPD politician to the editorial network Germany. Only last Thursday did Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) again discuss the topic with the Prime Minister. Integration and language courses are already open, medical care and access to the labor market are made possible. “We are in a much better position than we were in previous refugee movements.”
It is now an absolute priority to ensure fair distribution throughout the EU, Faeser said. It is true that there is solidarity in accepting refugees in all EU countries. But this agreement would have to be “implemented by everyone together”. She is calling for this together with France and Poland and will consult again on Wednesday with EU Interior Commissioner Ylva Johansson, said Faeser. She also announced that she would talk to the interior ministers of the G7 countries on Thursday about “how refugees can also find protection in countries outside the EU such as Canada, the USA and Japan”. dpa
