The now famous photo of Michael Schumacher in a hammock with his daughter Gina Maria and a little Max Verstappen, it made all Formula 1 lovers smile and opened the book of memories that binds the two families. Michael and Jos were in fact teammates at Benetton in 1994 and at the end of the 90s / early 2000s they often shared their summer holidays, as evidenced by the image spread by Max’s mother – Sophie Kumpen – on Dutch television during a special program dedicated to world title won by his son, current Red Bull driver. Max also recalled those years and that period, focusing on the memories that came to his mind about ‘Uncle Michael’. The words of the 2022 world champion were reported by F1-insider.
“My father started talking to me in German since I was little. Mainly on go-kart tracks. He wanted it so, to have a balance with respect to the conversations we had at home. I remember the first kart laps, I remember Feuerbach-Hahn – I think that track no longer exists -, then Ampfing and very well Kerpen, the home of Michael Schumacher. I was three or four at the time and I just knew he was ‘Uncle Michael’, he was always very nice and nice. A great family man. I’ve never seen him as a world champion with all those records, also because I wasn’t aware of them. We have lots of photos and videos at home with him, and there was always Mick or Gina. It was great and I still have positive memories of those weekends today. We always went karting, me, my father, Michael with Mick or Gina. We children got behind the wheel too, but when it got too dangerous, our fathers took matters into their own hands. Mick and I are both sons of art, but for him it was different than me. His father is the record holder of titles, he has won seven world championships and around him there was always the press, both in karts and in Formula 4, Formula 3 and Formula 2, more and more. But he has a good entourage that looks after him. “
