Just over two weeks after the official presentation of the car, Ferrari has revealed the name of the single-seater for next season, which will be called SF-24. The Maranello team has therefore chosen a name in continuity with recent tradition, focusing on the acronym SF, which celebrates Scuderia Ferrari, followed by the year of the racing season. No reference in the name, therefore, to the 95 years of the Scuderia as in previous seasons, with the anniversary which will be celebrated this year.
In fact, in the last championship, the car that achieved third place in the constructors' championship took the name of SF-23, with a path that Ferrari has maintained this year too. This formula debuted on the 2015 SF15-T, the second year of the Formula 1 hybrid, in which the final “T” was linked to the return of turbo engines.
Since 2016 the “T” was then replaced by an “H”, in order to make the link between F1 and the Cavallino even clearer with the hybrid era that began in 2014, with a name then maintained for the following two years .
On a statistical level, the SF-24 will therefore be the ninth single-seater to have the acronym starting with SF and it is the fifth time that the name is accompanied by the year in which the single-seater will take to the track. There are five occasions in which Ferrari has opted for a different choice during the hybrid era: beyond the F14T, in which the S for “Scuderia” was not added, in 2017, 2018, 2020, 2021 and 2022 the The names of the single-seaters were linked to the anniversary celebrations of both the racing team and the Maranello company.
In 2017, the 70th anniversary of the foundation of the Italian company was celebrated, with an acronym that was maintained the following year (SF71H) to symbolize the continuity between the two projects. In 2019, however, Ferrari had chosen to commemorate the ninetieth anniversary of the creation of the Scuderia, while in 2020 the name of the ill-fated SF1000 symbolized the achievement of a thousand Grands Prix in Formula 1, the only team to reach this milestone. The latest exception is that of the F1-75 in 2022, when the Cavallino chose to call its car F1-75 to celebrate three quarters of a century of the company.
The veils on the car will be removed on February 13th, with a more sober presentation than last season.
