vIf you try to grab a worm on smooth parquet, you have to be quick. If you touch the slimy-pink body with your thumb and forefinger, it begins to twitch as if under electric shocks. Then it slips away, back onto the living room floor, leaving only a thin film on the hand.
For the hundredth time this week, I overcome my disgust and squeeze a little tighter.
Five days before: “They are the most exciting and fascinating pets you can imagine,” says the founder of the worm box mail order company I ordered from. He makes videos in which the worms speak with happy, squeaky voices. They wave from the packaging as smiling cartoon characters. I still have to look away as I dump the live worms out of the mail into their new habitat, a plastic box with air holes. There are hundreds. Some almost as long as my hand. Disgust, I am learning at this moment, is easy to underestimate.
