According to the study, the results of which were published in the journal Human Reproduction, if men lose kilograms of weight, their sperm count increases.
The study of 50 obese men found that those who lost weight by following a low-calorie diet improved their sperm count by about 40 percent.
According to Bobby Ngari, assistant professor and director of the male infertility program at New York University Langone Health, the weight loss in 8 weeks was accompanied by an increase in the number of sperm, an increase in their concentration and density by 49%.
“It appears that losing weight and maintaining an ideal weight has a profound effect on increasing sperm count,” said researcher Sen Sorensen Torekov, professor of biomedical sciences at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark.
“The new results may be useful in improving fertility, as previous studies have shown a link between higher sperm counts and faster pregnancy,” Turikov added.
“Excess adipose tissue can promote the conversion of testosterone to estrogen, and obese men have been shown to have lower testosterone levels than thin men,” she continued.
