The president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) said this Monday (June 13, 2022) that “evidence leads to believe“which was made”some evil” with British journalist Dom Philips and indigenist Bruno Pereira, who disappeared in the Vale do Javari region, in Amazonas, since June 5th.
“The evidence leads us to believe that they did something wrong with them because human viscera have already been found floating in the river that are already here in Brasilia to make the DNA” he said in a radio interview. CBN from Recife.
This Monday, 2 bodies were found in the region where the journalist and the indigenist disappeared. The information is from the Phillips family. The PF does not confirm.
When the president spoke about the disappearance, the PF had not yet confirmed that it had found “biological materials” in the region. “By the deadline, by the time, we already have 8 days, going to the 9th day of this all happened, it will be very difficult to find them alive. I pray to God that this happens, that we find them alive. But the reports, the indications lead to the opposite at the moment,” Bolsonaro said.
The Chief Executive also called “expendable” the decision of Minister Roberto Barroso, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) in which he determined that the Union immediately adopt “all the necessary arrangements for the location” the journalist and the indigenist. The minister determined that a report be presented, within 5 days, informing all the measures adopted and the data obtained.
“you are expendable [Roberto] Barroso pretending to be the owner of the truth and giving the president 5 days to explain or find these 2 who disappeared in the Amazon. We are doing our part. I don’t have exact number [para] tell Mr Barroso that there are tens of thousands of people who disappear a year in Brazil and only care about these 2”, said.
According to Bolsonaro, the government is concerned “with all” and monitors the cases through the Ministry of Women, Family and Human Rights.
About the case, upon arrival at the Planalto Palace this morning, the vice-president Hamilton Mourão said “to twist” for the pair to be found alive, but stated that the area of the disappearance is “dangerous”.
“It’s a police case, right? It is an inhospitable region, far from everything, on the border with Peru. And on the Peruvian side, a series of illegalities takes place, wood and so on. On our side, too. The two people enter an area that is dangerous, without asking for an escort, without notifying, effectively, the competent authorities [e] are at risk, right? Unfortunately that’s it”, said Mourão.
the british newspaper guardian, with which Phillips collaborated, claims that the bodies found were tied to a tree. The information would have been given by the Brazilian ambassador to the United Kingdom to Phillips’ family members.
Phillips and Pereira were in the region to interview indigenous people. Pereira is an employee of Funai (National Indian Foundation). Univaja classifies him as an indigenist”experienced and in-depth knowledge of the region”.
The Javari Valley concentrates 26 indigenous ethnic groups, most of them with isolated indigenous people or with recent contact. Pereira is a contributor to Univaja, which is an entity maintained by the indigenous people of the region. The indigenist had already denounced that he was being threatened in the region. The PF opened an investigation into the complaint.
According to the British newspaper guardian, Phillips is writing a book on the environment with support from the Alicia Patterson Foundation. The journalist had been reporting on Brazil for over 15 years for newspapers such as guardian, Washington Post, New York Times it’s the Financial Times.
The area where both were last seen, the Vale do Javari, is on the border with Peru and is a route of circulation for international drug trafficking. The region is also a target for loggers, prospectors and fishermen.
DISAPPEARANCE INVESTIGATIONS
On June 6, the MPF (Federal Public Ministry) announced that it had opened an administrative procedure to investigate the disappearance of the 2. The investigation is being conducted by the Navy, with the participation of the Federal Police, Civil Police, National Force and the Vale do Ethno-Environmental Protection Front Javari.
The PF heard the last two people who met Dom Phillips and Bruno Araújo. The agency did not disclose the name of the ears. He said they testified as witnesses—not suspects—and were later released.
On June 7, 41-year-old Amarildo da Costa de Oliveira, known as “Pelado”, was arrested in the act by the PF. Oliveira was arrested during an approach for possession of drugs and 762 caliber ammunition, of restricted use. He was also carrying hunting weaponry.
Considered a suspect in the disappearance of Phillips and Pereira, Oliveira had his temporary arrest requested by the PF. The court accepted the request on June 9.
The PF found blood on Oliveira’s vessel. Last Friday (June 10), the researchers also found “seemingly human organic material” on the Itaquaí River, in the Javari Valley.
On Sunday (June 12), the Amazonas Fire Department said it found a backpack, a notebook and shoes. On the same day, police officers found a health card with the name of Bruno Pereira. In addition to the health card, the police found a pair of pants, a flip-flop and a pair of boots from Pereira and a pair of boots and a backpack from Phillips.
“SLOW” SEARCHES
Since the disappearance of Dom Phillips and Bruno Pereira, the Brazilian government has been criticized for its actions in relation to the searches. International organizations such as the UN (United Nations) and the OAS (Organization of American States) demand more efforts from the Brazilian authorities.
“The response was extremely slow, unfortunately. We think it is good that now, after a judicial measure, the authorities have used more means for the searches”said the UN spokesperson for Human Rights, Ravina Shamdasani last Friday (10.jun).
On Saturday (June 11), the OAS gave Brazil a period of 7 days to redouble its efforts to determine the situation and whereabouts of the 2. It also wanted information on the actions taken.
Commenting on the disappearance of the 2, the president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) said that the path that Dom Phillips and Bruno Pereira took was a “adventure not recommended” because the region is “completely wild”. The government denies that the searches had anydelay”.
