Bus accident|The CEO of Onnibus does not sign the assessment presented after the accident about the connection of the yellow brake light to the course of events.
Onnibus in Thursday’s collision, it was a coincidence that no worse damage occurred in Helsinki’s bustling core.
“It was lucky in the accident that nothing worse happened,” says the head of the investigation of the case Lasse Manninen from the Helsinki police.
CEO of Onnibus Joona Hurmerinta does not confirm the assessment that the cause of the bus accident at Asema Square in Helsinki was a brake failure.
“Based on our research, we can’t confirm that it was a brake fault, but we can’t rule it out either,” says Hurmerinta.
According to him, Onnibus will also find out if the cause was human error.
“This batch has no indications of this,” Hurmerinta adds.
Helsinki a dramatic collision took place in the center on Thursday afternoon, when an Onnibus bus crashed into the railing of the parking garage ramp. The bus got stuck on its bottom and was left hanging in the air by its bow.
The bus had left Kampi at 15:10 and was on its way to Kotka. There were 29 passengers on board, none of whom were injured.
The head of the investigation, Manninen, reminds that the accident happened in the center of the city in the middle of commuting traffic. It was entirely due to random factors that no one was injured, he states.
In the preliminary investigation, a technical investigation is to be carried out and the necessary number of people to be interrogated. The suspected crime is endangering traffic safety.
Thursday Commercial Director of Onnibus Petteri Rantala assess to STT, that the cause of the accident was the failure of the bus’s brakes. According to Rantala, a yellow brake warning light had been detected on the bus earlier in the day.
CEO Hurmerinta does not agree with this assessment.
“Our current view is that the yellow warning light had no connection to the accident,” he says.
He also points out that there are many types of yellow warning lights.
What kind of instructions does Onnibus have on a general level: Can the bus drive more than 130 kilometers to Kotka if the brake warning light is on?
“Our line is clear: If there is anything known that could affect safety, the car will not be driven. If the red warning light comes on, the car must not start,” says Hurmerinta.
According to Hurmerinna, there are no indications that the collision was intentional.
