In June 2021, it was reported that Sea of Thieves developer Rare had canceled and restarted development of its new IP. Everwild. Now Xbox Studios boss Matt Booty has explained what’s going on, stating that there is nothing to worry about.
Booty said game development is an iteration-based process with lots of moving pieces. Precisely, he stated: “What is Rare known for? They are known for creating new IPs and for creating worlds. And I have to say, when you look from the outside and hear words like ‘reset’ and ‘restructuring’, they sound a little too direct and a little more extreme than what actually happens when a game comes to life. ” said Booty. “They are just trying to make sure they create something special. We’ve shown a glimpse of a world, you’ve seen the art style the team has chosen, but we want to do it well, “he added.
Booty went on to say people could be surprises since game development can be a roller coaster experience. If you were a fly on the wall and saw a team create a game, one day you might be shocked and wonder how the game could ever come to light, and the next day you might be delighted with how it’s taking shape, Booty said.
That said, Booty said he understands that people are eager to see more of Everwild and to know what kind of game it is and what it is, and hopes to be able to share more when Rare is ready.
Everwild was announced in November 2019. At the time, Rare said the game would give players “new ways to play in a natural and magical world.” Over the years, the team has also seen the arrival of new employees, such as the new creative director.
