The Environment Committee of the European Parliament failed this Tuesday to approve a resolution calling for a total ban on the use of the herbicide glyphosate in the European Union (EU).something that was highly criticized by the Greens and environmental organizations.
MEPs failed to secure a majority to lodge an objection to the EC’s decision to renew approval of glyphosate. The matter obtained 38 votes in favor, 40 against and 6 abstentions.

MEPs from the Greens, the Social Democrats and the Left advocated a resolution calling on Member States to ban glyphosatebut “part of the Renew group joined the right and the far right to support the agricultural chemical industry lobbyists in favor of reauthorization,” the Greens said in a statement.
The Dutchman Bas Eickhout, MEP of the Greens and vice-president of the Environment Committee of the European Parliament, considered that “the great agricultural lobby won at the expense of the health of farmers and our ecosystems” and warned that allowing glyphosate to be authorized again would be “give a blank check” to large companies in the sector to sell a pesticide about which there are many loopholes regarding its long-term effects on health.

The organization Health and Environment Alliance (Heal) regretted the result of the vote and considered that it contradicts what the European Parliament decided on glyphosate in 2017, when he called for a phase-out of glyphosate within five years, by 2022.
“The Agriculture Committee’s failed objection to the renewal of glyphosate is not in line with the European Parliament’s call for a complete elimination of the substance as part of the European effort to chart a path towards less dependence on harmful pesticides,” said Heal.
“We call on European and national decision-makers to recognize the state of science on the negative and irreversible health harms associated with glyphosate exposure and support its gradual elimination as soon as possible,” added Natacha Cingotti, from the same association.

On September 20, the European Commission proposed extending the use of the herbicide glyphosate for another ten years, until 2033, in the European Union. although community sources were open to reviewing and withdrawing their approval before this period expires. if new scientific studies appear that advise it.
For now, the EU justifies the extension of the permit to use glyphosate based on the latest report from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), which this past July ruled out “critical areas of concern” in the use of the herbicide, although he admitted that some issues had not been able to be evaluated.
