European Union leaders are set to meet in the Czech capital, Prague, on Friday, in an attempt to resolve tensions over how to tackle rising energy prices.
Lengthy discussions are likely on whether and how setting a cap on gas prices can help alleviate the situation.
Many EU member states support setting a ceiling on gas prices, while others, including Germany, warn of the risks.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen recently opened up to the idea of a temporary cap on the cost of gas, without specifying how that might be implemented.
When the commission chief arrived for the meeting, von der Leyen said the EU needed to discuss how it “identifies peak energy prices and price gouging”.
And von der Leyen warned of a distortion of the “parity level” in the European internal market. She said companies in the EU should compete “by quality, not by subsidies”.
Calls for an EU-wide solution have increased in intensity in recent days, after Germany announced an energy aid package worth 200 billion euros ($196 billion).
