Elche cancels a performance by comedian David Suárez after his video about the management of DANA

The Elche City Council, which is governed by the PP, has canceled a show by comedian David Suárez because it considers that “there are lines that cannot be crossed, such as laughing at human misfortunes, in this case the loss of homes by DANA.” The decision, as elDiario.es has learned, was motivated by the video published on November 11 by the comedian in which he criticized the political management of the tragedy: “Spain does not deserve to have the political class of Sudan.”

“Do you remember when we talked about how, in the event of a catastrophe, politicians would defend us? Well, it turns out that they are like an alcoholic father. He hits you, he fucks your mother, he goes to get tobacco and doesn’t come back,” he began by saying. From there, he dedicated words and imitations to the different political leaders of all stripes involved in the management of DANA, starting with the president of the Generalitat of Valencia, Carlos Mazón.

“I’m retarded” were the words that the comedian uttered as if he were giving voice to the leader. In response to the supposed “people” who would have complained about “losing their home to politicians,” Suárez pronounced as if he were the PSOE: “Get out, fucking Nazi!” Another of those mentioned was Yolanda Díaz, whom he parodied by saying: “In the end, only the problem of rents in Valencia was solved, people no longer have homes, they no longer have to worry, how rich.”

A spokesperson for the Elche City Council tells elDiario.es that “the cancellation is not due to criticism of politicians, that is something that is inevitable and assumed.” The show, titled white humorwas going to be performed on January 12 at the Gran Teatro de Elche. “In it he talks about his controversies, sex, trials and getting older,” reads the synopsis of this show which has already been performed at the San Francisco de León Theater – also public –; and with which he is scheduled to travel to other cities such as Albacete, Madrid, Pontevedra, Vigo, Seville, Ourense, Zamora and Valencia.

Mayor Pablo Ruz Villanueva (PP) made the decision to cancel it last week, which was when his representatives notified David Suárez. “It is a cancellation on the basis that it could offend politicians or political parties. “It’s the last straw,” the comedian laments in statements to this newspaper, “it’s not a social issue of talking about deaf-mutes and that there is a part of the population that is offended. Part of the power of Elche itself saying: ‘This cannot be. We can’t let you act because this video has offended us.’” “That is an almost Francoist censorship thing,” he criticizes, “it is worth knowing. “It is unthinkable that this will happen in 2024 in Spain.” “We are not talking about a video that could offend any kind of sensitivity.”

Second time canceled in Elche

This is not the first time that the Elche City Council has canceled a performance by David Suárez. In 2019, when the mayor of the PSOE Carlos González was governing, they decided to veto him for publishing a tweet that they considered “nauseating” and that represented “a lack of respect towards people with Down syndrome”.

“The other day they gave me the best blowjob of my life. The secret was that the girl used a lot of slime. “Down syndrome had to have some advantage,” he posted on Twitter, which earned him his dismissal from a Cadena Ser comedy program. The Prosecutor’s Office even asked for a year and ten months in prison for his joke, but it ended up being acquitted two years later.

The PSOE Elx recalled what happened this Monday in the Plenary Session of the City Council, where they asked the current mayor about white humorsince they were “surprised” by their inclusion in the program. “We ask the Government team to reconsider the action, for making a type of denigrating humor and being totally provocative in their comments and public messages,” the party stated.

They assured that they respected “freedom of expression”, but that they understood “that for this there are other types of privately managed cultural venues and spaces that can offer this type of offer.” “We believe that public institutions must protect the rights of the most vulnerable groups,” in addition to “offering cultural programming that respects ethical and moral values.” The response from PP mayor Pablo Ruz Villanueva was blunt: “I can tell you that this performance has been cancelled. Indeed, it is not our business to give a public space to someone who denigrates people.”

David Suárez: “PP and PSOE are the same shit”

David Suárez has also remembered what happened in 2019 in Elche in a new video published on his social networks this Tuesday. “The City Council canceled my performance at that time. He was from the PSOE, and now from the PP, do you know what that means? That the video was right. The PP and the PSOE are the same shit,” he snapped.

“It bothers the Elche City Council that I get involved with politicians because it means me getting involved again with people who have Down syndrome. “They have told the people who had bought at the entrance that they have canceled the gig due to a schedule readjustment,” he added in the new video. “You haven’t canceled it, you have censored it because the video has touched your balls and you don’t want anyone to find out,” he concluded: “Ask for your tickets and freedom of expression to be returned.”

Nor is it the first cancellation that David Suárez has experienced in 2024. The promotional video for his show scheduled for last October 18 in the Madrid town of San Fernando de Henares, included jokes such as: “Did you know that the movie The Sinking was going to be called Living in San Fernando de Henares? This is no joke, the entire municipality is sinking and to solve it they are putting more injections into the ground than into Kiko Matamoros’s face.”

With it he alluded to the deficiencies of Metro line 7B that crosses the municipality. The City Council decided to cancel his show after seeing the video, alleging in a statement that his words represented “an absolute lack of respect for the neighbors.” “The intention was to promote the performance, not ridicule the town. It is paradoxical that making visible a problem that attacks the citizens themselves becomes a problem,” he commented on what happened to this medium. “In that video they talked about more sensitive topics. “This is what was missing, not being able to laugh at the politician on duty,” he says about it now.
