Editorial | Beautification sits firmly in economic language

Yt negotiations have also started to be called change negotiations.

The beginning of the year during the time, while following the financial news, I have had to learn a new word: change negotiations. Over the course of the spring, some companies, such as the butcher shop HK Scan, have been doing such things.

So which ones? From the next sentence of the announcement, you could have guessed what it was about: “The goal of the negotiations is to reduce the amount of work by no more than x person-years.”

That is, the traditional joint action or yt negotiations with staff reductions. Yt negotiations are all too familiar in working life.

The Cooperation Act, formerly called the “Act on Cooperation in Companies”, has had a dark reputation. It has become synonymous with getting fired. The law is colloquially known as the Termination Act.

The name change came about when the old yt act was updated at the turn of the year. Yt negotiations therefore became change negotiations. The content of the law itself changed less than the name change suggests.

In itself change negotiations as a word is at least as apt – or obscure – as yt negotiations, although the latter term is already known to be connected to its content.

When a company has to resort to change negotiations, it’s not just about handing out kicks. It is equally possible to lay off the workforce or a part of the workforce or to have a shortened working day or week. The rest of the job description is being rearranged. The aim is to reach almost the previous production with an even smaller number of employees.

Also, the last part of the compound word yt or change negotiations is a bit misleading, because it is not actual negotiations. Employee representatives do have the right to be heard and present their own options, but the employer makes the final decisions.

The content cannot be obscured by the term change.

The Yt Act is a procedure law in its form. In particular, the procedures of the yt law aimed at reducing the number of people are so precisely defined and the sanctions imposed for negligence are so great that the employer easily prefers to follow the letter of the law rather than the spirit. Then you don’t always even strive for a genuine dialogue with the staff. As long as the section is followed, you don’t have to pay large compensation fines.

With the coronavirus pandemic raging, companies had a faster procedure for layoffs. However, its validity expired already in the winter. Now let’s go with the basic formula again.

Layoff used to be called a more straightforward term, forced leave: the employer orders to stop working and suspends the payment of wages. Fortunately, the majority of wage earners are so aware that they have joined an unemployment fund. In that case, you will receive earnings-related unemployment allowance for the period of layoff – or unemployment – and you will not have to settle for the basic allowance.

All kinds the name changes raise suspicions in the skeptic that the terms are trying to obscure an otherwise clear issue. George Orwell wrote in his work 1984 about new language: the thought police of the ministry of truth were always removing from use terms and events that had a negative connotation. At the same time, history was changed.

The same process seems to continue, especially in financial news – which is by no means the fault of the news. Taking over the terms gives you a considerable amount of power.

All economic forecasts point to the southeast in the coming months. During the fall, change negotiations may become all too familiar to many, both as a term and as the term’s content. The content cannot be obscured by the term change. Probably during the autumn at the latest, change negotiations as a term will be established so that it is automatically associated with downsizing, like the unemployment law until now.

As in the old translation concept called Istanbul sing:

The names just change

and covered with them

That nothing changes the law,

the person remains the same.
