Scientists reassure that it is a bradyseism phenomenon typical of the area, with close earthquakes and intense seismic activity.
In central Italy there is still fear for women earthquakes. This time the citizens woke up with a start on this Sunday 14 April, with an earthquake of magnitude 3.7. Fear gripped the city, with scenes of people pouring into the streets to find shelter in some way and save themselves from the tremors that shook the buildings.
The tremors, which occurred in bursts between 9.40 and 10.10, had their epicenter in the area of Phlegraean Fields, more precisely between the Solfatara and the Pozzuoli Air Force Academy. The first and strongest tremor, of magnitude 3.7, had a depth of 2.5 kilometers, while the subsequent ones, of magnitudes 3.1 and 2.8, occurred at a slightly greater depth (2.8 and 2.4 kilometers respectively). However, these are rather superficial shocks.
The earthquake was felt distinctly throughout the Phlegraean area, but also in Naples and in various areas of its metropolitan belt, such as Casoria, Marano, Melito and Mugnano. Fear has pushed many citizens to leave their homes to seek greater safety outdoors, creating moments of chaos and apprehension.
Luckily, they didn't register damage to people or things of importance. The firefighters, who intervened in various areas, carried out inspections and checks, finding no structural criticalities.
However, it seismic swarm has caused considerable concern, especially among the population living in areas already affected by Phlegraean bradyseism for a long time. The mayor of Pozzuoli, Luigi Manzoni, immediately activated the Municipal Civil Protection Operations Center to monitor the situation and invited citizens to remain calm and follow the instructions of the authorities.
The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) immediately activated its operations room and sent a team of experts to the area to monitor seismic activity. Scientists reassure that it is a bradyseism phenomenon typical of the Campi Flegrei, characterized by periods of more intense seismic activity followed by phases of calm.
However, they invite the population to pay attention to any aftershocks and to follow the instructions of the authorities. This morning, the note from the mayor of Pozzuoli tends to reassure the population:
We all felt the tremors of a little while ago, while we await indications from the Vesuvian Observatory, I am on the street with the Pozzuoli municipal police talking to the citizens, despite everything at the moment we are not experiencing any particular problems. I know you are scared, but I ask you to remain calm and report any critical issues to the Municipal Police numbers on 081/8551891 and the Civil Protection numbers on 081/18894400. We will update you shortly.
