The CEO of Audi Markus Duesmann he reiterated his strong belief in the future of electricity, not only as regards the company he leads, but in general for the entire transport sector. His latest statements on the subject were collected by Der Spiegel, in a round table which was attended by other leading exponents of the German automotive industry, such as Hildegard Müller (VDA), transport expert Prof. Stefan Bratzel (CAM) and Wolf-Henning Scheider (ZF Group).
“Climate change is caused by fossil fuels resulting from extraction from the soil. This system must end. We need a fossil-free society“, Explained Duesmann referring to the current situation, where however the car manufacturer he presides is not exempt from co-responsibility. Audi currently sells electric cars, but also endothermic and plug-in hybrids. “Plug-in hybrid technology bridges the gap, facilitating the transition to fully electric driving. As a result, it will still have a place for the next few years. That said, the goal must be 100% electric cars“, He then added.
For the future, however, Duesmann sees only one truth: “Electric cars are by far the most efficient technology. Audi is investing in electric vehicles and that means we are also investing in charging infrastructure. Wherever there are cars, there must be the charging infrastructure. Perhaps it will be even cheaper than today’s gas stations. I am convinced that governments and companies, together, can bring us there“.
To do this, it will be necessary to have a significant technological footprint: “Technology is the key to solving the world’s problems. The Volkswagen Group has the financial power to provide answers to mobility questions. That is why I have no doubt that Germany, the German auto industry and the Volkswagen Group have a good chance of still being at the top of the industry in ten years’ time. We are still in a strong position in China and the Volkswagen Group is indeed the market leader in that area. So, I’m not worried about the future, but we’re keeping an eye on everything that happens around us. After all, e-mobility has allowed new manufacturers to sell competitive cars“.
