The number of people switching from health insurance is considerably higher this year than in previous years. According to sector organization Zorgverzekeraars Nederland (ZN), 1.4 million people have switched health insurance. This is a provisional figure.
Health insurers and comparators reported peak activity in the last weeks of the year. Due to the sharp increase in health care premiums, more people would look into other insurance policies. According to an initial analysis by Vektis, based on the figures of all health insurers, it appears that a large number of insured persons have actually switched health insurers.
This concerns 8 percent of the insured. That is considerably more than in previous years. Around this time last year, it was announced that 6.5 percent of policyholders had switched to another insurer. The final switching figure was slightly higher at 6.7 percent. The switching percentage has been varying between 6 and 7 percent for years.
The final number of switchers will not be known until April. Then it will also become clear how many people have remained with the same insurer, but have expanded or downsized their supplementary and dental insurance policies.
In the autumn, insurers and comparators noticed that more and more Dutch people opted for a higher deductible for their health insurance. “Given all the rising prices, it was to be expected that people would take a more critical look at their health insurance policy,” said care expert Amanda Bulthuis of comparison site Geld.nl earlier.
