The German had been among the numerous drivers involved in the carom after the restart from the Safety Car, with the marshals forced to immediately give the red flag.
With the cars grouped in lineup two by two as per the restart procedure, Schumacher and Thomas Preining were fighting for seventh place when they made contact at Turn 8, crashing into the barriers at high speed on the left.
The Winward Racing driver was subsequently transported to the Ludwigshafen hospital, about 30km north of the circuit, where initial checks revealed that he had suffered a skinned knee and lumbar spine bruises.
Subsequently, his dad Ralf Schumacher revealed that his son has sustained a fracture of his lumbar vertebra and that for the moment he will have to wear a corset, but fortunately without the need for a spinal operation, with the recovery expected in a few weeks.

“When David got home, he was still complaining of back pain,” Ralf Schumacher told the German news agency dpa.
“We then decided to go to a hospital in Salzburg to do an MRI. It turned out that a lumbar vertebra was fractured.”
“According to the doctors treating David, this means a break of about six weeks.”
David Schumacher ended up missing Race 2 on Sunday due to damage to his Mercedes-AMG GT3 in the crash, prematurely ending his first season in the DTM.
