This year was particularly active for dragon ball. Not only did we get a new movie in the franchise with superherowe also enjoy a long arc of the manga. Of course, with this ‘resurgence’ the typical complaints of hundreds of former fans of Goku and his adventures came out again.
That if they no longer knew what other transformation to take, that they are only changes of colors, that creativity is over. Seeing this so constantly made us look back to see if Akira Toriyama’s work got that bad. The answer we found is that perhaps the fans are blinded by nostalgia.
The transformations ‘taken from the manga’ are there since Dragon Ball Z
In our travels through networks we find arguments that Dragon Ball is the superior anime and manga and that nothing will surpass it. It gives us the impression that they have this series on a pedestal when it has had its faults from the beginning. Much of what they complain about now already appeared in Z’s time.
One of the most common complaints about Super are the transformations, but these constant changes of state began in Z. Once we met the Super Saiyan, we only wait to meet his second and third version. Likewise Piccolo had his fusion with Kamisama and Trunks had his own rougher version of the super saiyan. From then on we had phase shifts to dish out, and we didn’t mention the villains.
Perhaps the only difference between Dragon Ball Super and Z is that transformations are now noted with a color change. While in its predecessor these depended on the length and sharpness of the hero’s hair. Defeating the villains always depended on the heroes training a lot and a new power up emerging..
There was always a constant game between the villains and Goku: They rose in power and so did he soon after. They spent several chapters fighting, until for some reason, Kakaroto took out a new technique to finish off his rival. It is a constant of the franchise that is there from the beginning, but for some reason today it is very repudiated.
Goku no longer gives prominence to others? … he never did
Another point that comes up against Dragon Ball Super is that Goku will always be the one to deal the final blow. Again, we’ve seen this since Z, especially in the sheer number of movies that came out around that time. Kakaroto is the protagonist and therefore he must be the one to defeat the great enemy of the arc.
In the Saiyan arc, he defeated Vegeta; in Frieza’s, the emperor and so on. Of course, it won’t be long before the defenders arrive to argue that in the Cell arc, the one who caused the last attack was Gohan. This is true, but even so, Goku did not miss the opportunity of the limelight by joining him to launch the kamehameha that destroyed the android.
The complaint about Goku not sharing the spotlight became very prevalent with the Granola arc. Since again it seemed that Vegeta would be the great hero, but Goku took out a new Ultra Instinct. However, for those who have already read the last chapter, we finally see that it is not Kakaroto who defeats Gas, but Frieza with a rather surprising turn for dragon ball.
We recommend you: Dragon Ball will arrive on Crunchyroll with everything and Latin dubbing
Going back to the movies from the time of Z, if you watch them you’ll realize that almost all of them end with Goku throwing a genkidama to win. Or if he is not the genkidama, with his friends giving him all the strength they have left so that he can return to battle, stronger than ever. If everyone was excited back then, why are they upset with similar acts now?
Dragon Ball didn’t change, you did
We believe that this new hatred towards Dragon Ball is due to a very important factor: we have grown up. When we were children we watched Goku’s adventures with the innocence of childhood. We all wanted to become Saiyans and participate in exciting battles. Even Goku’s naivety struck us as funny.
But as we grow older, we become more critical, we learn more things, and there will be times when our tastes change. Many became more intolerant of some things they see in Super, although the reality is that they are elements that have been repeated since the nineties. They simply see that time with the lenses of nostalgia. But if they watch that anime again, they’ll know we’re right.
You can not deny that dragon ball change. It’s not as violent as it was in the past, at least in the anime, and it seems like they increased the amount of comedy more. However, change is necessary for a product like this to survive. Also, let’s remember that Akira Toriyama’s greatest work is nowhere near its 40th anniversary.
It is good to keep with love everything that we live in our childhoods. But neither can we continue to believe that everything was perfect before. Dragon Ball has been unsuccessful from the start and still remains one of the most successful franchises in history. Perhaps the only thing you need to enjoy its novelties is to no longer take them so seriously. Just like when you were a child.
