21-1 home win, 1-2 away loss, 3-1 home win. Bo Svensson’s record as a coach against FC Bayern is one of the best they have to offer at Bruchweg. Even as a player, he was involved in three victories for FSV Mainz 05 against the record champions under Thomas Tuchel, one of which came in Munich.
It’s just a shame that Svensson can’t draw on his wealth of experience. “I have no idea,” he said at the press conference on Thursday when asked about the recipe for success. “I really don’t know, I can’t seriously give a good answer to that.” So he will probably start working on a strategy and a line-up out of nowhere, which will start this Saturday from 3:30 p.m. (in the FAZ live ticker for football -Bundesliga and on Sky) in the Munich Arena should lead to the greatest possible success.
After three clean sheets in the past English week, Mainz can take on Bayern with confidence, and 1,500 fans will have their backs. Only four points separate the 05ers, who have moved up to sixth place in the table, from the second-placed champions, who in turn are one point behind the surprise leaders Union Berlin. One can almost speak of a pursuer duel.
Svensson prefers to speak of “the most difficult of our 34 games this season. Everyone can see how Bayern play” – and FC Barcelona felt it in the Champions League on Wednesday evening. “It’s not just a bit better than a month ago, it’s very, very good,” says the 05 coach, assessing the current situation in Munich. So good that as a coach you have to reckon with a hearty defeat? “In the Bundesliga it’s always possible to get a clap if you don’t perform,” says Svensson, referring to his own 0: 5 in Wolfsburg last season. “The danger is greater in Munich than against other opponents.”
But such thoughts did not occupy his mind. Rather, on the match day itself, it is about investing all your energy, willingness to run and fight – and you have to look forward to it before the match day. The Dane emphasizes that it is a privilege to be able to compete with such opponents. “You will be tested, you can see if you can keep up with a Kimmich, a Musiala, an Upamecano in each individual position and as a team. It’s very, very difficult, but if you’re not looking forward to this task then you’re in the wrong place.” Danny da Costa’s fun should be limited; the full-back is ill and will probably not be sufficiently resilient until Saturday.
Svensson left open whether he would align his team more defensively than last and with whom he wants to equip the offensive. Of course, it’s hard to imagine that he would put Karim Onisiwo, who was so outstanding in the 5-0 win against 1. FC Köln, on the bench; the same applies to Marcus Ingvartsen after four goals in four consecutive games. Jonathan Burkardt would then probably remain the part of the substitute again. “Jonny handles this role well,” says the coach of the attacker, who was absent several times before and during the season for various reasons. “He’s an ambitious boy, he wants to play. You can’t plan the short-term absences, but he has my trust. That doesn’t change anything just because he’s still without a goal.”
